Leancamp - Session Ideas

Entrepreneurs, designers, managers, developers, innovators – how can they help you? Leancamp is all about learning from people from other disciplines and different perspectives. It’s a rare opportunity to raise your current challenges and ideas, so that others can help you through them and contribute their knowledge.

Please comment and discuss. Use votes to register interest so the session host can understand if the topic is interesting to people. (Votes do not get used to choose the session – we’ll do that together at 10am.)

To help get the discussions going and give you an idea of what topics people might be interested in, please engage in the conversation – be open with your challenges and constructive with your suggestions

Want to make the most of this? There is some guidance, tips and tricks to get you started at http://leanca.mp/getting-started.

  1. From idea to $2m+ in revenue: Combining 20% improvements for growth and profit

As a first-time founder with Teambox, I struggled with product traction. I thought I understood the customer and their needs and was looking at the wrong metrics to assess progress.

As we started to measure and became data driven, we continued a 10-15% growth month over month in the metrics that matter, for a sustained 2-3x yearly growth.

I'd like to explain the 3 phases we went with for it: clueless, market fit and scaling.

  2. An intro to Wealth Dynamics for entrepreneurs

Wealth Dynamics is a personality profiling system and philosophy of entrepreneurship invented by UK serial entrepreneur Roger Hamilton.

It will show you what work each person in your startup should be doing (and what they shouldn't be doing) in order to get the fastest results with the least effort.

  3. Knowsy iPad game case study

I helped The Innovation Games Company bring a new game platform from concept to App Store in just a few weeks. A key success factor was the way the small, collaborative, cross-functional team worked together. During this project, I learned some new ways to adapt my familiar user experience techniques so they more quick, visual, continuous and collaborative.

I'll share what worked (and what didn’t work) and provide five useful UX practices that help your team move faster with better results.

  4. Lean and productive

At first, Lean Startup seems simple and easy. But when you use it, you'll get overwhelmed by all the things you and your team have to do. What about we have a session looking at how to stay productive?

  5. Let's design an Effectuation tool, Founder-Centric style

If anyone has Effectuation experience, I'd love to sit down with you and hack together some new tools.

At Founder-Centric, we've found that taking the big principles of entrepreneurship, and knocking them down to a quick, simple and context-specific tool, helps founders move forward quickly without getting bogged down in complexity.

Doing this in 30 minutes is tough, but worth a punt, I think! Who's in?

  6. Startup Culture: How to create a good one?

Lots is said & written about the importance of a good company culture & how to create one. Check these posts for example: http://onstartups.com/tabid/3339/bid/96459/Why-I-Spent-200-Hours-Writing-Culture-Code-Instead-of-Python-Code.aspx or http://boingboing.net/2012/04/22/valve-employee-manual-describe.html or http://joel.is/post/37639846554/the-evolution-of-culture-at-a-startup.

So lets take 30 minutes to share & discuss the challenges and lessons from our own experiences, because I see a lot of startups struggle with this.

  7. Real-time, rolling cohort analysis

Andy Young once showed me a rolling cohort analysis he was using at Group Spaces. There were a few advantages because they were real-time and also linked to acquisition signals. Andy, would be great for you to do a show and tell!

  8. Intro to UX and UX for Products

This workshop is an introduction to what UX (User Experience) is and what you can do with it. User Experience takes people as a starting point and advocates to make products for people; products that are easy to use and are useful for the people buying and using it. Whenever we interact with products, be it complicated software or a simple teaspoon, we have a user experience with that product. This workshop will dive into the world of UX and leave you with a basic understanding of how important it is to understand not only products, but also the user…

  10. MVP Technology Decisions for non Technical coFounders

Lean Startup entrepreneurs have to heavily rely on Tech cofounders or out sourced development. When considering the technologies involved to get an MVP deployed, developers are often not lean minded enough. To avoid difficulty getting out of the starting blocks, you should have some grasp of decisions that are being made on your behalf. A brief overview of the issues followed by recruited panel offering their experience of some of the major choices to be made. What's worked well, and what bit them in the ass.

  12. What the @$!# is a customer?

One of the common problems people struggle with in applying Customer Development is that they talk about a generic customer. That makes it easy to create a solution that sounds good in theory, but doesn't actually make anybody happy. In this, I'll give a short talk about the common issues I see when mentoring teams, and then facilitate a discussion so that everyone can share relevant experience and get their burning questions answered.

  13. When is the right time to Pivot

When the processes of measurement and learning are correctly put in place, at some point it becomes clear that a company is either moving the drivers of the business model or not. If not, it is a sign that it is time to pivot or make a structural course correction to test a new fundamental hypothesis about the product, strategy and engine of growth?

  14. Removing features and making your users scream!

Narrowing down to the minimal feature set seems quite hard for startups that already have some momentum. We've heard how Farb Nivi cut out half of his features in Grockit as a test, just to find out that nobody cared! But that's a brave thing to do. Anyone else trying this approach?

  16. Whether and how joint ventures, partnerships, etc can work for startups.

Founders are always hoping for that "big meeting". Is there any value in spending mental energy trying to make it happen? Can partnerships & JVs deliver value for startups or is that the domain of individual and big companies?

  17. The Local Maxima - aka testing the wrong assumptions

You know when you test a bunch of assumptions only to realise you've had a bigger assumption the whole time? It's a bitter-sweet win, which would be all the sweeter if we could get there faster.

With my last failed startup, I was testing customer acquisition for advertisers, only to realise that problems with on-boarding other key partners, hotels, was going to kill me. With Leancamp, I ran a bunch of tests on the assumption that sponsors were necessary, which affected how I was interpreting the feedback.

I've come up with a few ways to help startups avoid this, which…

    Atoms: Physical Space
    Bits: Virtual Space

    • 3D printers along with other computer controlled robots have opportunity for us to mash the innovation of the tech entrepreneur with physical retail.
