So who wants to join in? Joseph, Daniel - you guys in if I host it? We could make it a fishbowl discussion. (see http://leanca.mp/2012/01/formats-of-leancamp-sessions/)

I think presenting some of the principles of TDD would be useful, and count on the brain-power of the people in the room to help find useful connections. For example, the idea of small units might bear fruit when thinking about choosing an MVP, and working out what to test and how to test it.

Is it worth digging into ping-ponging and other TDD methods for sense-checking? Those might be good for uncovering business and customer assumptions.

Let's work with some specific examples to make this more tangible. I'll suggest one, but if anyone else has their own example, please share and we can go with those.

Since Leancamp borrows a lot from Barcamp, one assumption that came along with it is that it needs sponsors. Our current hypothesis is that it doesn't, but that hypothesis only became clear recently, after we'd run a bunch of tests assuming that sponsors must be included in some way. In London, we went ahead without sponsorship to get the show on the road. Now, I'm interested in testing that hypothesis in other locations.

It would have been better to spot this assumption sooner. How could HDD and TDD approaches have helped here?

+1 Visual Thinking is a great skill in the toolbox, since it provides a common language that spans disciplines. When you understand something, you can draw it, and when you draw it, you can help people understand it. When you draw together, you come to shared understanding quickly. Learning sketchnotes is a great first step. Plus, you can share you sketchnotes from other Leancamp sessions to help spread the knowledge! :)

Awesome idea. There are so many statistical tools we can use, and we seem on only like Split Tests in startups so far! Could you explain some of the methods you describe? t-test, ANOVA, Chi-Square. When would I need each of them?

Will you be covering how to spot and record valuable things, and how to make sense of a bunch of studies after you've sat in with a few different customers?

Hi Scott - these are really interesting questions. I can see how they could reveal perspectives that would be useful thinking hats for finding market traction.

To help make this more tangible to others in the discussion, would you like to share what inspired you to suggest this? Is there a particular opprtunity or challenge you have that led you to this space?

Let's share some specific challenges here to see how this session can be framed.

With Leancamp, I've been interested in measuring retention to gauge the quality of the experience, but I find that hard with this type of ad-hoc event. We've been using the Sean Ellis Test (simiilar to Net Promoter Score) as a proxy as well, but that's not giving us the same insight as we'd have with a proper way to analyse retention, such as a cohort analysis.

Another challenge: last year, we took a shot at a type of conference (rather than unconference) tour. We started with a few events, iterating as we went. But it wasn't until I sat down to work the numbers, and to brain-dump alternative models, that it clicked we were on a much harder path than we needed to be.

Alexis, what inspired you to suggest this? Anyone else have challenges to share here?

In addition to User Experience aspects, we might want to connect this to discussions on actionable metrics and business models too.

Awesome idea. I've noticed how people gravitate to their comfort zone when applying the Lean Startup learning loop. In my last startup, it took me a while to realise I was testing the wrong things - I had a focus on validating customer acquisition, but it turned out I should have been focused on retention. I've seen programmers zoom in to specific features too soon, and designers emphasis the light-weight prototypes without checking the customer had budget to solve the problem in the first place.

A bunch of us meet us fortnightly for a one-hour peer-advisory session, which helps here. We could share how that works...

We did a 30-second, "who I'd like to meet today" pitch at Mini-Leancamp in Scotland. People really found it valuable.

Since I started working with Alex Osterwalder and Alan Smith (of Business Model Generation) doing Customer Development, I've picked up some techniques which might be useful. Happy to share, and even happier to learn what others are doing!
